Transportation in Medellin

Metro System

Medellin has one of the best public transportation systems, serving 90% of the population with access to modern metrocables. Metrocables are like gondolas. These aerial lifts can transport people up and down the steep mountain ranges surrounding the city. Currently, the system contains four lines. A fifth line is under construction and set to open in 2019. The metro system also consists of railroads, longer buses and feeder buses that connect to metro stations all over town.

Taxi or Uber

While everyone seems to be using Uber to get around these days it is not perfect. A taxi driver will most likely be more familiar with the quirks of Medellin traffic and locations. Uber is usually cheaper and the vehicles more modern.

Renting A Car in Medellin

There are many options for tourists who want the independence their own vehicle offers. Medellin has over 20 car rental companies leasing cars for as little as $24 a day (for the Chevy Spark). The Chevrolet Spark happens to be the number one selling four-door vehicle in Columbia. Its fuel efficiency makes it the perfect rental for driving around Medellin to see the beautiful scenery. The Chevrolet Sail, a roomier sedan, is the second most popular car sold in and around Medellin. When asked, retired General Motors executive (Bill Poulos), commented that he believes the quality of the Chevy vehicles will meet the needs of those who want to rent a car to get around while in Medellin.
